In 2022 Gatekeepers Are Obsolete

Writer: edwardgustsedwardgusts

Hi Artist,

Being an artist right now is difficult as fuck. Finding collaborators, funding, and an audience are all extremely difficult tasks.

But there is one thing that you don't need to worry about right now, and that is pleasing gatekeepers.

Oh sure, if you want to be on a CBS show or get your work seen at the Getty; you will definitely have to deal with gatekeepers of all sorts. But these are no longer the only avenues to getting your work out there.

In the back of every artist's head is the thought: "Is it good enough?"

or, if we are really honest: "Am I good enough?"

And while I cannot prevent these thoughts from tripping you up, I can bring you the glad tidings that you no longer need to prove yourself to the people whose very job reinforces them.

One person's opinion can no longer hold you back.

No one wants to publish your book? Publish it yourself.

No one wants to distribute your movie? Distribute it yourself (and save on all the "Miscellaneous" expenses that distributors seem to have)

Sell your crafts on Etsy. Instagram is your very own art gallery. Put your song online.

Now you may not find your audience. You may find criticism and even cruelty. But no one can stop you from making your art and putting it out there. And that is a beautiful thing.

Thanks for making Art.
